Our mission is to serve and elevate the unheard communities within Portland, Oregon by fusing different mediums of performance to push the boundaries of realism, and by producing financially accessible new works using a core ensemble of artists who belong to historically marginalized communities, particularly queer and trans artists of color.
Our primary objectives are to radicalize the medium of theatre, challenge the dominant paradigm, produce new works, spotlight marginalized communities, make theatre more accessible, and offer healing to our audiences.
VALUES: - Challenging the Narrative - Radicalizing the form of theatre. - Challenging the dominant narrative by spotlighting oppressed voices. - Using trauma-informed creation to destigmatize mental illnesses. Community Engagement: - Bringing together diverse artists to make engaging and accessible productions for, and to cultivate empathy within, the Portland community. - Intentionally connecting with and actively listening to the community we serve. Support for Artists - Creating a safe, inclusive space for artists to nurture their craft and tell their stories. - Giving opportunities to new artists in the field. - Paying artists a living wage. Inclusion: - Producing new works by, with, and for queer and trans people and people of color. - Making theatre and theatre education more accessible to a wider audience. - Expanding access to theatre for disabled and neurodivergent artists and audiences. - Actively facilitating conversations with disabled persons within our ensemble, audiences, and the Portland community to recognize and accommodate their needs. Accountability & Collaboration - Centering design through the use of theatrical elements as actors, in the style of total theater. - Shared creative responsibility in devising and ensemble work. - Committing to a self-reflective creative and administrative process. - Encouraging non-complacent action and reaction. - Embracing the discomfort of truth and accountability.
VISION: - We breathe vitality into the medium of theater for a new era that breaks from the white cis-heteropatriarchy of mainstream performance art. - We provide people in our diverse community with productions that represent the community as a whole with physically and emotionally powerful artistry. - We provide the Portland community with performances and workshops that encourage an expanded sense of personal capability. - We create a model for the performance industry in which artists of color as well as queer and trans artists, make a living wage and are valued.
